Three groups who really must purchase student health insurance are students studying abroad, international students, and students who would otherwise be covered by their parents HMO plan. Most standard medical policies written in the U.S. do not cover expenses incurred outside of the country, and most HMOs provide no coverage for dependents residing outside of their service area.
